Oxford Word List Assessment: Planning for Word Wall

At the beginning of each school year, we need to assess the word knowledge of each transitional and conventional student so that we know which sight words they still need to learn. If your school doesn’t use the Oxford Word List, then you’ll need to develop a similar assessment for your school word list.
Overall Information
Our aim is that each student should be able to read and write all the words on the Oxford word list automatically. This gives them a great starting point for word knowledge for both writing and reading.
The Oxford Word List Assessment is completed with the student present. There are 2 versions of the reading part of the assessment. The version for verbal students has a single word on each slide – we flash it up and then the student reads it. The version for students with who use AAC has four words on each slide – we leave the slides up for a slightly longer time and then student points or eye gazes at the word. The record form is included with the instructions.
